freeze. president trumps foreign policy goals break the mold of what people traditionally think is achievable on behalf of our country we're finding new ways to govern the deliver new victories our job is now to achieve results on behalf of america. and we're doing that. we've created an international unity around our peaceful pressure campaign against north korea including influencing china to exert on priest unprecedented economic influence on north korea at the riyadh summit the president routed muslim majority nations to assume their responsibilities for stopping terrorism nato members are not contributing more to shared security and our approach to south asia and specifically afghanistan means building upon our relationships with india and pakistan to stamp out terrorism and support the afghan government in providing security for their own people and isis is fraudulent

caliphate in iraq and syria is on the brink of being completely extinguished thanks to an aggressive new strategy led by the president what we have accomplished we have done as a team. similarly secretary mineta has levied economic sanctions on north korean related entities countries must increasingly decide whether they will do business with north korea or with the community of peace loving nations ambassador haley has spearheaded in achieved enormous success passing the toughest u.n. sanctions to date hold north korea general madison ah communicate virtually every day and we agree that there must be the highest level of coordination between our diplomatic efforts and our military efforts you can't have a stronger partner than a secretary of defense who embraces diplomacy and i hope he feels he has the partner he needs at the state department. and this is just the beginning of the
6:02 pm
list of partners and friends across the government who are all working for the american people there's much to be done and we're just getting started to address a few specifics that have been irani asli reported this morning. the vice president has never had to persuade me to remain as secretary of state because i have never considered leaving this post i value the friendship and the counsel of the vice president and i admire his leadership within president trump's administration to address the many important agendas of president trump both form a foreign policy perspective and it dipped diplomatic i'm sorry domestic objective let me tell you what i've learned about this president whom i did not know before taking this office he loves this country he puts americans and america first he's smart he demands results wherever he goes any holds those around him
6:03 pm
accountable for whether they've done the job he's asked them to do accountability is one of the bedrock values the president and i share while i'm new to washington . i have learned that there are some who try to sow dissension to advance their own agenda by tearing others apart in an effort to undermine president trump's own agenda i do not and i will not operate that way and the same applies to everyone on my team here at the state bar when i wake up in the morning my first thoughts are about the safety of our citizens at home and abroad there's no more important sponsibility i carry with me than ensuring that americans are safe providing for the security of the united states must be the number one goal of our american foreign policy president trump and his administration will keep moving forward as one team with one mission doing great things for the united states of
6:04 pm
america. to make america great again. thank you. i think it's the most important of all the article is to reaffirm my commitment to this role that president trumps asked me to serve and to dispel with this notion that i have ever considered leaving i have actually that question repeatedly for some reason it continues to be mis reported there's never been a consideration in my mind only i serve at the appointment of the president and i'm here for as long as the president feels like can be useful to achieving his objectives. he. will have a recommendation for the president we're going to give him a couple of options of how to move forward to van's the important policy towards iran as you've heard us say many times the j.c. feel way represents only
6:05 pm
a small part of the many issues that we need to deal with when it comes to the iranian relationship so it is an important part of that but it is not the only part and i've said many times we cannot let the iranian relationship be defined solely by that nuclear agreement. i want. i'm just i'm not going to deal with petty stuff like that i mean this is this is what i don't understand about washington again you know i'm not from this place. but the places i come from we don't deal with that kind of petty nonsense and it is intended to know nothing but divide people and i'm just not going to be part of this effort to divide this administration. abu mazen or i have not spoken to the president this morning i think is on its way to las vegas this is my understanding so you. know
6:06 pm
one. more. yes i believe we do you know i think the pakistan relations it's very pakistan relationship and u.s. relationship is extraordinarily important regionally and as we rolled out the south asia strategy we spoke about it in a regional context it is not just about afghanistan this is about the importance of pakistan and pakistan's long term stability as well we have concerns about the future of pakistan's government too in terms of them we want their government to be stable we want to be peaceful and many of the same issues they're struggling with inside of pakistan are our issues so we think there is opportunity for us to strengthen that relationship we're going to be working very hard at all levels from the state department to the defense department to our intelligence communities as well as economic commerce opportunities as well so it really is a regional approach in pakistan is critical i think to the long term stability of
6:07 pm
the region thank you very much. and you're watching the news good thanks for joining us so what you were just seeing is the u.s. secretary of state rex tillerson he was a making a statement of the state departments and what he says is that he is addressing his comments were addressed as he called them erroneous reports that have been put out there the secretary of state said that us commitments to trump is still remain strong and he also said that the vice president's my. pence never had to persuade him to remain secretary of state's tillerson saying that he has never considered leaving his post in the end administration has much to be done and according to him they are just getting started kimberly joining us from the white house worth taking a step back and really for a moment and just tell us how we got here. well there have been
6:08 pm
a series of reports and i think anyone could understand how there could have been this speculation and washing the potentially the secretary of state was unhappy in his post because just human nature given some of the interactions given the sort of brusque management style of the president and then the more methodical contrast of the secretary of state has left many people wondering how the secretary of state could continue in his role take for example with the secretary of state rex tillerson recently in china putting pressure on china to sort of step up economic pressure on north korea in the sort of incremental approach of diplomacy to rein in north korea's nuclear program and then undercut well he's in that process by the president in a social media tweet where essentially he said his own secretary of state is wasting his time it isn't the first time the president has kind of knocked the secretary of state out sort of figurative lee at the knees and so there were many
6:09 pm
here in washington that sort of felt the tension that was escalating and that's why you had the secretary of state coming out to address that reporting that has been almost feverish really hysterical in the last couple of hours here in washington with the speculation that he had had enough and he wanted out it's no secret i can tell you from a variety of sources that there have been adjustments for not just the secretary of state but a number of the members of the trumpet ministration were found the adjustment to the prednisone the nit picking of one side and the other in washington to be a bit tiresome and so you hear him addressing that head on but also focusing on what he wanted to be reported because he doesn't make very many public statements and that is is that there isn't the division that has been reported and he has sort of spoke to that. head on saying that he felt that this was really sowing the seeds
6:10 pm
of division which is detracting from what he says is the greater goal and that is trying to advance an america first agenda which is what he says not just he has signed on rex tillerson but the president making haley the u.s. ambassador at the united nations so certainly that's what appears to be on his mind that's why he came out but certainly washington very stirred up thinking that he would be giving an announcement of just the opposite not one that he was committed and staying but perhaps unhappy and wanted to go bit of a surprise there ok can really help that we thank you for giving us about update from the white house moving on it's already the world's fastest growing refugee crisis that's the exodus of hundreds of thousands of muslims from me and him are all the way to bangladesh and now the u.n. increasingly believes that crimes against humanity are being committed it's particularly worried about the state of women and children falling victim to killings rape as well as force displacements meanwhile according to
6:11 pm
a report from human rights watch me in mars' military executed dozens of on all this the twenty seven mean mars government military denies such abuses saying they're only targeting armed groups or more than half a million revenge on muslims have fled weeks of violence in myanmar and they're now living in camps in bangladesh aid organizations say they need at least four hundred thirty four million dollars that's in the next six months to help them peter hart is the emergencies director at human rights watch he says the stories coming out of rakhine state are imaginable. human rights watch has been working in the camps in bangladesh for the last month electing these accounts we have interviewed dozens of eyewitnesses and survivors today's massacres they are really at large you know massacres i've been working at human rights watch for today and some of the cons are elected over the last few weeks have been some of the most horrific ever like
6:12 pm
that where human rights fights were talking about women having their children taken away from them in front of them and it turned into debt large scale rape people put into houses and burned alive. these are massacres involving hundreds of people and individual villages this is absolutely a court and they that campaign carried out by that me on my military we're talking about soldiers in uniform and women and children to the meeting acts of rape and burning these villages there are supported by helicopters in many of these attacks so these are not the actions of rogue soldiers we're talking about an organized military force and gazed in ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity on the router steps. well the overcrowded camps are creating perfect indifference for major disease outbreaks like colorado doctors without borders and the camps are on the brink of a health disaster that's as filthy water and sea flow through. time for child rule
6:13 pm
has more from outside cox's bazar where many of the camps are set up. no one can describe the condition of some of this temporary refugee shelter built and to prolong area thousands of people concentrate in one area and scratching get up to thirty a degree there is very few left. floating in the drainage there is no sewage system no fresh water system very few fresh two boats are set up which is some help but the international aid agencies are warning that you need to be far more number of electrons and fresh water sources in this camp one bangladeshi and you say that there are three hundred twenty seven person using one letter and that's a very dissimilar condition now we spoke to a lot of the doctors who are running this training and different camps most of the doctors told us the majority of the patients they're saying have diarrheal diseases skin infection and respiratory illness with high fever most of the patients are women and children unless there is
6:14 pm
a long term strategy chalked out by the government international donor agency there is a clear danger of cholera and dysentery epidemics spreading out in this camp the international coordination group is sending about one million or a vaccination people that should help the situation to a bit most of the refugees are not going back very soon that has to be a long term strategy once the media focuses on out of this refuges there's a clear danger of aid flow into this camp will slow down while you often hear the room described as the world's most persecuted minority so we're online put together an in-depth feature on why that is also in this article we take a look at exactly who the real are and what the government's in me and maher has been saying as well you can find it on al-jazeera dot com by searching for me and maher who are there were. just a reminder that you're with a news group we are streaming online through you tube facebook live and at al-jazeera dot com as well and we do want to hear from you from on any of these

stories you can send in your comments to any one of our online platforms you can tweet us at a.j. english or we're on facebook at facebook dot com. you can send us a whatsapp on plus nine seven four five zero triple one one four nine just a reminder to use the a.j. news. now the vote in favor of secession in iraq's kurdish region is bringing two if it's neighbors closer together the presidents of turkey and iran have met in teheran discussing a joint response to the curtis' referendum which they fiercely oppose. and hasan rouhani said they wanted to keep national borders as they are and threatened to take steps against any breakaway kurdish region. as far as we concerned iraq is one single country syria is one single country and we do not accept the geographical border changes in any way whatsoever we do not wish to exert these pressure but the wrong decisions made by some of the heads of the
6:16 pm
kurdish regional government need to be compensated for. we correspond with the iraqi central government as far as we're concerned this referendum is illegitimate we have already taken certain steps but from this moment on which more decisive steps will be taken. anderson's joining us from istanbul so they're threatening to take steps andrew what kind of steps can we expect if they elaborates. well very short on detail from both of those presidents their grim faces in the briefing room by all the main players and it would seem that there is certainly cooperation on a security level the two arm is the chiefs of staff iran and turkey have spent two days prior to this meeting having discussions it appears there are plans afoot for more cooperation on military issues and also anti terror operations as they're
6:17 pm
described but in terms of what threats implicit threats we're getting from both president rouhani and president urged one it's unclear whether it's economic sanctions further economic sanctions or security issues it seems the saber rattling will continue it seems they want to engage in pressuring the iraqi kurds even more the leadership that is it is not clear has to be said exactly how this is going to be done now what is clear is that they're both saying that categorically that there is effectively a three way mechanism now and it's going to be very very together that's iran but the iraqi central government and turkey from the same hymn sheet pushing in the same direction taking action on
6:18 pm
a basically it would seem an increasingly strong basis but whether or not that means cutting off the oil pipeline that runs through turkey that will hurt both sides both the goods and the turks and indeed the international community and particularly russia that has a massive investment in kurdish oil so there are lots of unclear aspects to this meeting involving these two presidents who have now what in different terms is described as converging interests of course in. the syrian war that very very large distances apart on that issue that is still a cause for concern in terms of what can be agreed to the start a process rights ok and are simmons we thank you elsewhere iran and iraq's military have held joint drills along their border after that kurdish votes charles stratford has an update from the border crossing the iranian tanks that we saw on
6:19 pm
the border yesterday in this area have gone today we've spoken to members of the iraqi ministry of interior the border guards in this area they say that the joint military maneuvers between the iraqi and iranian military that were happening close to here now have stopped today they say that military exercises what they describe as exercises continue the border remains very quiet it is still open we have seen very little traffic here all day but what's so interesting is that they slanguage coming out of chair on from president hassan rouhani blaming this referendum on what he describes as a sectarian plot supported by foreign governments suggests just how much more needs to be done to put an end and find a solution to this crisis new details have now emerged about the las vegas mass shooting that suggest the attack was thoroughly planned well apart from having an

arsenal of weapons u.s. police say that man stephen paddick also set up cameras in and outside his hotel room apparently to spot anyone coming for him the sixty four year old's partner is being questioned by the f.b.i. after returning from holidays in the philippines killed fifty eight people and wounded hundreds more before taking his own life rob reynolds joining us from las vegas what do we expect from donald trump who is on his way to las vegas. that's right daryn the president trump an air force one should arrive a little more than an hour from now here in las vegas his plans for the day include a private visit with some of the survivors some of those hundreds of people who were injured in the shooting rampage on sunday they'll also meet with medical personnel there doctors and nurses who helped to save lives after the shooting
6:21 pm
stopped he's then going to have a more public meeting with local officials and with local law enforcement the president has a highly praised in tweets and other statements the response of law enforcement here in las vegas to the shooting spree on sunday now just before leaving washington president to was on the lawn of the white house and spoke briefly to reporters and here's what he had to say. well it's a very sad thing going to pay our respects to. the police who doesn't really affect the job numbers should. have been learning a lot. better be that that probably very very sad day but. now the job of condone consoler in chief as many people call it has become part of the modern presidency after
6:22 pm
terrible events like this one recalling for just for one example president obama's response to the mass shooting in the charleston church several years ago but it's not really a role that seems to come very naturally to president trump and in fact some have criticized both the tone of his remarks and his behavior during his recent visits to spread comfort in hurricane ravaged areas in the states of texas and florida and just yesterday in puerto rico daryn all right some are brunell's thank you. gallagher reports now on other new developments including the police response during the shooting a scene from a unique point of view there bottom cameras take a look. as stephen public finds down on a crowd of consequence on sunday night newly released police body camera footage shows panic and confusion offices scramble to locate the source of the gunfire and
6:23 pm
get members of the public to safety this is a dramatic snapshot of the moments before public was located on the thirty second floor of the mandalay bay hotel police gave more details of how events unfolded. the suspect i can tell you that we know now that he fired off and on for somewhere between nine and eleven minutes we know that the suspect fired over a dozen or so volleys and we know that the firing by the suspect ceased at ten nineteen we had patrol officers actually working another event at the mandalay bay . who heard the shooting and they took it upon themselves to form up into a team enter the stairwell begin ascending the floors and also evacuating hotel guests the swat team had to arrive first official say several searches of now revealed the full extent of products. currently forty seven firearms have been
6:24 pm
recovered these firms recovered from three different locations those locations consisted of the hotel room as well as verdi embassy skeet nevada. they were purchased in nevada utah california and texas the gunman purchased rifles shotguns and pistols inside products hotel room assault rifles can be seen on the floor many of the modified to fire more rounds what's not clear is why a retired sixty four year old accountant carried out the shooting but his longtime girlfriend mary lou donnelly has now been described as a person of interest steven products family history is also emerging his father benjamin product was at one time on the f.b.i.'s most wanted list for bank robbery and theft president also declared without citing any evidence that product was mentally unbalanced he was the sick man a demented man. a lot of problems i guess we're looking to him very very seriously
6:25 pm
investigators say they're also looking at products financial history described as a high roller he gambled heavily and sent large sums of money overseas what's clear is that steven partick planned his attack well in advance even installing a camera outside his hotel room to watch for approaching police his motives however remain a mystery this is a man with no criminal record and someone who neighbors describe as a recluse as this city continues to mourn its dead it's a question many want answered but so far the reasons remain unclear and they gallacher al-jazeera las vegas nevada well before his visit to las vegas president trump slowdowns in the u.s. territory of puerto rico to see for himself the devastation left behind by hurricane maria thirty four people are now known to have died and it is that congress that visit to puerto rico andrew that is generating a lot of conversation online as for a dream president trump and other federal emergency management officials say that progress is being made in puerto rico but half of the population still lacks access
6:26 pm
to drinking water and more than one point four million americans there are still without power president trump and the first lady toward neighborhoods damaged by the storm and met locals who are trying to read. their homes and rebuild their lives now aside from the handshakes and reassuring words some of the president's remarks have generated additional controversy including his comparisons to hurricane katrina which of course killed more than eight hundred people in the united states in two thousand and five i hate to tell you what a week up but you thrown up budget a little out of whack because we spent a lot of money on puerto rico and that's fine we saved a lot of lives if you look at the. every death is. but if you look at a real catastrophe like katrina and you look at the tremendous hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people that died and you look at what happened here with really a storm that was just totally overpowering nobody's ever seen anything like this.
6:27 pm
now jeremy can indyk is a former chief of u.s. foreign disaster assistance he called trump's comments appalling and deeply disrespectful he says we still don't know the final death toll and every fatal catastrophe is a quote real catastrophe and here's what some local residents had to say about the president's remarks i think that we definitely caused a lot of money to the states but they also has that think about how many soldiers we lost how many lives we lost three percent in the united states so they've given us a lot of money yet but we've been giving them a lot a lot he is the way he has jumped is like this but can we say now some protesters greeted the president on his arrival calling on him to tackle puerto rico's debt crisis the island was already broke before the storm the u.s. territory has seventy billion dollars of debt and unemployment rate two point five times the national average and almost half the population lives under the poverty
6:28 pm
line trump then signaled in an interview with a us cable news channel that help might be on the way. we're going to work something out we have to look at their whole debt structure you know they owe a lot of money to your friends on wall street and we're going to have to wipe that out that's going to have to be you know you can say goodbye to that i don't know if it's goldman sachs but do ever it is you could wave goodbye to that so that was good news for a little while but then a few hours ago trump's budget director came out to say the president's comments should not be taken word for word so no bailout or debt relief for now but the white house is expected to ask congress for a twenty nine billion dollars disaster aid package for puerto rico now before i go it looks like trump's entire visit to the island may be overshadowed by one other moments when the president threw rolls of paper towels at hurricane victims it's clear specially if you listen to it that many people in the room were happy to see the president happy to take selfies with them and totally fine with this but others
6:29 pm
were offended by it lots of reaction to it online this journalist was told by one president that trump made fun of the situation showed no empathy and then throws a paper towel rolls to people in need as if he was playing go fetch with dogs now the president told his thirty nine million followers that he was shown great warmth and friendship in puerto rico and no matter what he does the fake news media will not write or speak the truth so let us know what you think about all of this you can tweet me directly i'm at anders chapelle or just use the hash tag. and we thank you now to the news we had at the top of the so what announcement from the u.s. secretary of state rex tillerson where he tried to knock down that he wanted to resign so he spoke at the state department in washington d.c. saying he's committed to the president and his administration. i think it's the most important of all the article is to reaffirm our commitment to this role that
6:30 pm
president trumps asked me to serve and to dispel with this notion that i have ever considered leaving i have after that question repeatedly for some reason it continues to be mis reported there's never been a consideration in my mind really sure at the appointment of the president and i'm here for as long as the president feels like to be useful to achieving his objectives so that was tillerson speaking a little earlier on the president himself who by the way is on his way to las vegas has been quick to respond from air force one via twitter here's what he said the n.b.c. news story has just been totally refuted by secretary tillerson and vice president pence it is fake news they should issue an apology to america let's bring in political hay and joining us from washington d.c. and that n.b.c. story has referring to is that tillerson reportedly had called trump a quote more on july meeting patty are people surprised what tillerson has come out
6:31 pm
and said that in fact he hasn't resigned there was speculation that he might. you know i think there was a lot of speculation before him that he was going to resign he has been getting an incredible amount of bad press from former people who worked inside this department saying that he's ineffective that president donald trump has basically cut him off at the knees when he speaks for america the allies in every other country doesn't believe he's actually speaking for the president so this also was tillerson and in essence trying to save his job what do we know about president donald trump what does he hate more than anything else in life criticism now can't stand being seen as weak so imagine this the secretary of state reportedly coming out not just calling him a moron calling him an expletive moron after a national security meeting now this is not a new route that is new reporting but the whole idea of the tillerson has been a happy new it has been around for months and it started really during the g.c.c. crisis the gulf crisis because we saw rex tillerson in this very building come out
6:32 pm
and say the embargo the blockade needs to end it was like an hour and twelve minutes later the president with rex tillerson standing in the front row of the rose garden said no rex tillerson i agreed this had to happen undercut him and that he's under kind of a north korea the moment rex tillerson came out on his way back from china said we are the u.s. is directly negotiator talking to the north koreans the president tweeted out that his secretary of state was great but that he should waste his time no need to talk to his tweet how he called him little rocket man again so this is a secretary of state that is under siege from washington elite and he is really talking in this speech to an audience of one trying to reassure the president that he is still on board with his agenda notice he didn't say he would even get into whether or not he called him a moron i think it's important to point out this n.b.c. news story is from four separate reporters and they have twelve they say twelve sources on a party let's just of just for a moment here because the secular state also do the dress the issue of pasta sauce
6:33 pm
we know that he is meeting with pakistan's foreign minister in washington what can you tell us about that. he did and you know we're seeing a bit of mixed messages were syrian second secretary of state rex tillerson talk about the alliance of the friendship but we saw from the department of defense just twenty four hours ago the secretary of defense say that he's willing to give pakistan just one more shot we've already seen this trump administration move to freeze millions of dollars in aid that it gives to pakistan because it says it's just not happy with what it's doing as far as combating terrorists in pakistan so one of the options they said well if they don't see any sort of improvement again this is coming from the military side they've said in hearings that they're going to get through the president trouble couple of options one would be more drone strikes in its territory to go after the terrorists that they say pakistan will go after themselves and the second is they could take away their designation as a major. nato ally that would cost them a lot when it comes to military aid so a very tense time in the relationship the pakistani foreign minister he is here in
6:34 pm
town trying to really smooth things over and in many ways rehabilitate his reputation of the country his country's reputation is all right thank you. well a draft united nations blacklist has named saudi arabia for killing and maiming children in yemen dots according to the reuters news agency which says it's seen the confidential reports it says the draft attributes six hundred eighty three child cows will seize to the saudi led military coalition during twenty sixteen and that it's responsible for dozens of fatah acts on schools and hospitals the report also notes of the coalition has put measures in place to improve child protection since early twenty fifteen this saudi led coalition has supported yemen's government in its fight against who is the rebels who control large areas of the country including the capital. the report also block lists the who with these as well as government forces and their militia allies well the coalition was briefly
6:35 pm
added to the block list last year before being removed by then u.n. chief thank you moon pending a review at the time but accuse saudi arabia of exerting unacceptable pressure let's talk to caroline adding she's the senior conflict and humanitarian advocacy adviser for the charity save the children joining us from london thanks for speaking to us your initial reaction to this blacklist of saudi arabia and the coalition but whether very pleased if they are opposed to ten out to be true it is important to stress that this is just a leak draft is not the final final version which we are expecting at some point if month but this is something that we've been campaigning on for the fatty arabia led coalition to be added to this list of shame policy it's a conflict that commit grave violation of against children alongside all the other parties and you haven't said that as to how it is like that these may however though i mean will being listed in this report if we do see the final version and
6:36 pm
they are indeed listed will that be a catalyst for change. we have cia but will be i know this can seem like something that's quite abstract it's just a list in a u.n. report but actually if this is true then the u.s. actually done was done something really important as you mentioned the saudi arabia led coalition was removed from the list last year after what was reportedly intensive lobbying and that's because it is very very shameful to be added to a list of policies alongside you know all the extremist groups around the world that commit grave violations against children the bomb hospitals that kill maim children the bomb schools that is a shameful thing and what we hope is that that will act as a wake up call to the saudi led coalition and all the other parties in yemen to change their behavior but the report also says that the coalition has put in place measures to improve child protection what kind of measures have you seen how is that actually translated into practical measures on the ground so we don't know exactly what measures that is referring to this sesame been some reports
6:37 pm
that there's been an improvement in targeting of schools and hospitals less attacks on hospitals by strikes by the saudi arabia led coalition but the reality is that while all stasi on the ground in yemen and we're working across the country in the north and south is that the humanitarian situation continues to worsen and attacks have continued you know there were multiple attacks in august as trying to kill children so you know it's clear that this is no we all where we should be there's still a long way to go to improve and so we look to the parties to sign up to u.n. action plans to improve their behavior what's at stake for children in yemen in particular the longer this war continues. it's hard to iran facades how devastating the war in yemen has been for children and if the world's biggest humanitarian crisis it's entirely manmade as a result of the conflict and so you have huge number the children who are on the brink of starvation or starving to death huge numbers of children who are infected
6:38 pm
by cholera which is still spreading across the country to turn who can go to school because the teachers and being paid or it's not safe enough to go and of them say all of this is a result of the conflict the haven't been peace talks between any of the sides over a year now and it's really really essential that they sit down and find a grownup negotiated solution to the conflict because this war is creating a humanitarian crisis the agencies like of just can't keep up with when responding but we converse upon foss enough to save every life our rights caroline and we thank you for speaking to us on. looking so mon is on his way to russia for the first official trip there by is sitting saudi monarch there'll be plenty to discuss riyadh on moscow have been at odds for decades especially in their fierce competition for oil markets they're on opposite sides of syria's war or a challenge reports from moscow. a saudi monarch has never visited russia before
6:39 pm
king solomon's trip is the culmination of months of bilateral diplomacy pushed along by recent energy market uncertainties and shifting u.s. foreign policy this unpredictability of there are trumping ministration. to saudi the saudi and saudis a lot and what they're hoping for is that they just sort of have this insurance by dealing with russians as a growing power in the middle east for a long ski think saudi arabia's quarrel with qatar has had an unexpected result washington's disrupted relationship with doha has along to the saudis that they might one day suffer the same as us influence in the middle east weakens rusher is being presented with several new opportunities moscow and riyadh's might well be putting behind the years of antipathy and perhaps forging a new more pragmatic relationship. the two countries are spent the past six years on opposing sides of the syrian conflict but russia's military support has turned
6:40 pm
the tide in favor of bashar al assad's forces saudi backed opposition groups are diminished saudi leaders have given their backing to the deescalation zones brokered by russia turkey and iran elsewhere shared economic interests have been bringing the world's two biggest crude oil producers together russia and saudi arabia have cooperated for the last year in cutting production to push prices higher from record lows there are promises of a one billion dollar russia saudi joint energy fund and other investments russia and saudi arabia may not be allies yet but they're certainly not the adversaries they once were rory chalons how does iran moscow well we have an opinion piece on al-jazeera which breaks down things on man's visit to moscow and the also argues that personal ambitions of the saudi crown prince and financial interests of russia are going to shape this historic visit read his analysis by searching for decoding

king solomon's visits to moscow let me show you what's happening in las vegas this is the scene right outside of the mandalay bay hotel we'll put pull it up in just a moment there pardon me that's not it we do have another sort of the mandalay bay that is where the attack took place in a las vegas there it is president trump will be arriving there shortly there we go there it is across over to mary in the mozzie joining us from london with more of the international news hi mariyam. i there darian well the catalans probably independence parties it's a debate secession from spain. and we generally do carlsberg him on his said he already feels like a president in a free country after more than two million kaplan's voted to leave in a band referendum on sunday. in barcelona for us what's the mood like there now only reliance. monday october the ninth next monday is going to be the day when the

probing dependence on the catalan parliament here is going supressed push the trigger wards independence and that piece of brinkmanship has some pretty serious consequences now i think i can't believe they thought that it would mean madrid capitulating on the greens that the man for negotiations and if anything the language from madrid is actually got tougher there are m.p.'s here openly talking about the prospects of being arrested for sedition and the word from madrid today is that they're considering sending the army in the sense of the to protect the national police here and so conversations about things like martial law are actually now being had in barcelona as unbelievable as it sounds and many of course of the pro independence campaign has been looking to the european union and european commission's and mediates and forced negotiations which is what they say they want but on that level two i think they're being blocked fronts timmons who's very senior inside the european commission came out with some fairly extraordinary

remarks he is saying that the rule of law and the constitution needed to be a bait and he said that the states have the right to use some level of force to protect the constitution violence does not solve anything in politics it is never an answer never a solution and it can never be used as a weapon or instrument your nose is better than anywhere else none of us want to see violence in our societies however it is of course a jew chief for any government to uphold the rule of law and this sometimes doesn't require to put portion it use of force. so all of which leads to some pretty serious questions for the pro independence movements here all of the insurrection you see in the streets abbas loan and places in the last couple of days remind me very much of what it was like when the pro

leave that campaigners were making great promises about independence from the e.u. insolvency and all this sort of thing but it does start to look now as if the negotiations for an independent catalonia with the e.u. might be extremely difficult and the practicalities of secession much more serious than many of the pro independence campaigners see i mean pretzel recognize. the wisdom of the crowd is difficult to resist particularly when the atmosphere is as relaxed and happy as it has been in barcelona. the singalong here is to a protest tune dating to the franco dictatorship when castle and traditions were systematically repressed that every teenager knows the words speaks volumes about the historical enmity toward madrid so secession beckons can catalonia go it alone why not give it a try they say democracy is pure and beautiful if you think spain is a proper democracy oh no. it's not not when they are.

believing that they have the power to shut us out. from government beyond their money and keeping. our money and them not returning. you know on their spending the money that they are shopping for to take things not hard for everyone . to leave spain camp here has all the momentum they think historically this is their time in the sun the idealized version of events is often presented to you here is catalonia unchained free from the tyranny of madrid's an independent sovereign republic able to make its own way and said happily among the european community of nations will things would things really be so simple. of course another european country voted for historic change recently to the u.k. to leave the european union but the essence of the argument was similar we want to be free from the control of others. it was convincing enough to win the arguments

but now the u.k. is riven with disagreements and the e.u. is blocking its key demands. so when he was pro independence council and m.p.'s how they can possibly stay in the european union when spain would veto it you get answers slightly less inspiring than the mood of the crowd what happens a couple only get stuck outside the european union as long as i was i would not like before or after what happened. i would not be a preferred literally out of the photo to benefit to feel yourself if you did not realize that for example you know the way. bridge of the road up out of there all of the union with additional triggers exactly like your ex accompany you know the government it could be the like like like iceland that's what they said well we're not very we are not. your family goes right have economic governance when you know all the difficult comparable questions the u.k. never asked itself borders trade agreements the rights of cattle lands in spain and

spaniards in catalonia nobody's bothering to ask about any of it's but if they do jump off the cliff to independence they will have the european union to deal with it could be incredibly messy gloriously al-jazeera in barcelona. one of the stories the u.k. prime minister is address the contentious issue britain's departure from the e.u. at the annual conservative party conference trees in may says that while she hopes for a good breaks it deal she's prepared for the negotiations with brussels to end in failure but she said that whatever happens the u.k. will remain a global country open to the world if you are a citizen of the e.u. who has made her life in this country i know you will feel unsettled and nervous but let me be clear that we value the contribution you make to the life of our country. you welcome here and i.

you know people are talking about in sports today here's the thank you terry serious football team are preparing for the biggest moment in their history unlikely it may seem bonds they could be on their way to a free for world cup for the very fast time syria take on australia in the first leg of the playoff on thursday the home game not really won't be played in their own war damaged country but rather in malaysia they still have a long way to go before russia the second leg takes place in sydney next week and should they win three will still have to play two games to qualify. we

have high hopes people have faith in us we're playing australia next they're a big team most of the players playing top leagues we have a match plan we want to serials and qualify ok well you would think the syrian people right across the globe would be united behind those players but that's not entirely the case for a national team viewed as a front for the government reports. the syrian national team's small draw in iran last month sparked celebrations in the capital. football has the power to bring people together but not in a government controlled damascus were only supporters of bashar assad are now together in public. not far away you won't find any scenes of celebration just more death and destruction in opposition controlled a sign that syria remains

a war torn country the young men here whose dreams were to play football find themselves instead dodging bullets and bombs now that is the president of the opposition syrian football association he was a member of the general sports union before defecting in two thousand and twelve in protest at the regime of bashar assad he says the current national football team doesn't represent syrians from noting that in the world is now interested in the national team in its big gotten about the massacres in my country the national team players and the management say football shouldn't be mixed with politics yet they have publicly thank those murdering out children they have expressed their support for russia iran and the syrian regime. a common for saying is also from italy he's been playing football for twenty years he believes the regime is using the play off with australia to increase its popularity. they're politicizing the game and the people have nothing to do with that this national team completely supports the

regime and its crimes my message to the world whether excepts this team supports the crimes of the regime against civilians. while the focus is on the success of syria's national football team dozens of civilians are killed every day the united nations says at least four hundred thousand syrians have lost their lives in six years of war. if syria does qualify for the world cup political opponents fear the war crimes committed by the assad regime and the struggle of syrians calling for freedom will be forgotten amidst the euphoria of the celebrations. ok so we heard from a lot of people that who feel like they can't get behind the syrian team but there are many others who will be chairing loudly on that say the hash tag yes we can has been used widely on instagram and twitter as you can see here throughout the world cup qualifying campaign of syria and if you search it you'll see a lot of images of people voicing their support for the team the first lady of
